April 6-12
After Great Sand Dunes, we spent a couple nights at a peaceful and well-ordered campground on the Ute Reservation near Pagosa Springs. Then we stayed at a dog ranch near Durango for four nights. There were chickens, goats, and horses, too, but the dogs were the focus because there were a lot of them, Simeon and Lev spent every free moment with them, and the crafty critters swiped two shoes and a bike helmet from us, none of which were recovered in working condition.
While based at the dog ranch, we celebrated Lev’s birthday with a lunch at a taco place and some Eliza-made brownies in a park. The kids and Erin visited Mesa Verde National Park and saw many amazing Pueblo ruins and cliff dwellings 1000+ years old.
Matt commenced a a multi-day vacation, allowing the whole family to venture north on the million dollar highway as far as Ouray – what a spectacular drive! In Ouray, known as the Switzerland of North America, we had a picnic and enjoyed a beautiful hike on the perimeter trail to a waterfall. We returned just in time to catch some live bluegrass music in Durango.
Matt and the kids went to a train museum in Durango while Erin hung out at a laundromat and stocked up on groceries.
On Sunday, we went to a church with a moving message about burning hearts. On our way to the gas station after the service, we passed a BMX bike park and thought we better pull in for a little fun before leaving Colorado for Utah.
