Texas

March 29-31

This post is out of order. My computer time lately has been for taxes.

We were planning to go through Texas anyway, so it worked out well that I (Matt) could help with a couple of railroad surveys for work. Unfortunately some equipment was not working, and there were parked rail cars on track the first day which made surveying difficult. But, a bad day in the field beats a good day in the office!

Texas is a very big state but we just saw the northern part, and just for three days. The part crossing from Oklahoma to Texas near Canadian was different than anything we’ve seen, with some mesa like formations. On the way southwest from Canadian to Pampa, there is a large dinosaur statue. At the church in Oklahoma we met a friend of the creator of the dinosaur. I think that’s pretty neat. Can you see it in the photo?

A couple of survey photos. I should have thought to take some train photos but we were hopping busy.

We stayed three nights in Pampa at an RV park, which was a new experience. The park itself had the cleanest showers and laundry room and a very friendly owner and neighbors. The city was a low density, dry and windy, and mid 90s, though cool at night. Erin and the kids went to a sad park. One thing we learned about Pampa is biking in the grass is dangerous due to the pricklers. I put three patches on a 16-inch wheel, and one on a 24-inch wheel. One nice thing about a work trip is reimbursed meals, so my coworker and I went to a mexican restaraunt, which was ok, and a good Texas steakhouse while we talked over our survey data.

Texas roads were easy driving and we were ready to drive west to New Mexico, though it was as windy as we’ve been in yet and somewhere we lost some of the camper’s plastic skirting. Thank you to the highway trash pickers!
